Try your best to catch the water so that it won’t spread. Whether that means place a bucket under the leak or using whatever means necessary to prevent water from spreading around. If you see water pooling in your ceiling, it maybe a good idea to poke a hole through the center of the water spot that is developing to allow the water to drain down into a bucket. Probe the ceiling with a screwdriver, you will likely find that the ceiling material is very soft from the water and you will easily poke through the drywall to allow the water to drain. 1
